Staff Profiles

Kimberly Green - Program Director

» Kim is happy to have re-joined the staff of Compeer Lancaster in April 2010 as its new Program Director, having previously served as Volunteer Coordinator. Kim graduated from Penn State with a Bachelors of Science and from Lebanon Valley College with a Masters in Business Administration. Prior to Compeer, she worked for a large pharmaceutical company, but when her entire department was relocated to another state, Kim decided to pursue her calling to work in human services. Already a Compeer volunteer and dedicated to Compeer’s mission of friendship, it felt like destiny when an opportunity arose to join the staff. Now Compeer’s Program Director, Kim is honored to be entrusted with leading this wonderful organization and ensuring it will continue to serve the mental health community.
Kim spends her free time with her husband, Andy, and their silly dogs, Tucker and Chase. Both Compeer Volunteers, Kim and Andy also enjoy being with their families and friends, traveling, and cheering on their beloved Phillies.

Debra Jones - Volunteer Coordinator

» Deb is no stranger to Compeer Lancaster, having served as Volunteer Coordinator in 2003-2005 and as Compeer newsletter editor since Spring 2009. After leaving Compeer in 2005, Deb undertook the blessings and challenges of being a full-time stay-at-home mom to her two young children. Deb graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science/Pre-law and earned a Litigation Management Certificate from Philadelphia’s Institute for Paralegal Studies. Deb worked for 14 years as a litigation paralegal in Philadelphia and Lancaster. Deb had a growing interest, however, in mental health and began work on a master’s degree in counseling through courses at Lancaster Bible College and the Harrisburg Area Community College. Deb is delighted to have this opportunity to return to the Compeer staff.
In her spare time, Deb enjoys volunteering, scrapbooking, traveling with her family, and exercising. She looks forward to upcoming time spent as a matched Compeer volunteer. Deb and her husband, Rick, live in Elizabethtown with their son and daughter, Ethan and Ellie.

History of Compeer

Compeer was established in 1973 in Rochester, NY. In 1980, the New York State Office of Mental Health became interested in replicating this innovative volunteer program and sponsored two workshops for mental health professionals on "Compeer - A Model Program."

Based on New York State's success, Compeer received a National Institute of Mental Health grant, which provided funding to establish an international Compeer office in Rochester, NY. The office of Compeer International provides consultation, training, and support to affiliates as well as assisting in the development of new affiliates.

Compeer International affiliates are sponsored by a variety of mental health and volunteer non-profint agencies throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Sponsors and Support

How does it all fit together at Compeer Lancaster?

  • Compeer Lancaster has many affiliations that are important to the success of the program. Perhaps you, like many others, wonder what they are and how they fit together.
  • Compeer Lancaster will celebrate its tenth anniversary on April 16, 2011. On this date in 2001, Compeer Lancaster became part of Compeer International. This "parent" organization has 98 current members and provides our program guidelines, suggested best practices, national statistics, new ideas for recruiting and fund raising, and an 800 number for advice.
  • Compeer Lancaster is also part of the Pennsylvania Coalition of fourteen Compeer programs. This supportive group has quarterly conference calls and an annual retreat that is sponsored by the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
  • Locally, Compeer Lancaster is a program sponsored by Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). MHALC strives to create a just, humane and healthy society in which all people are accorded respect, dignity and the opportunity to achieve their full potential free from stigma and prejudice. The work of the agency in promoting mental health, working to prevent mental and emotional illnesses wherever possible and to improve quality of life for persons with mental illnesses is ongoing.
  • Compeer Lancaster is also a member of the national network of Faith in Action programs. This network grew out of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Faith in Action start-up grants recipients. All of these affiliations are important to Compeer Lancaster and help us send out our message. They also provide an opportunity for us to learn about how to serve our compeer friends and community more effectively.
